Your teachers this year are Mr Wiggin and Mrs Hardman and your teaching assistant is Jane.
Welcome to year six and an exciting year ahead.
During the Autumn term our topic will be WW1: Life in the Trenches. The children will learn about the assassination of Franz Ferdinand, the countries that were involved in the war, what it was like to live during the war, the details on certain battles and much more! We have some exciting days and trips planned…so watch this space!
This term, the children will be swimming on a Monday afternoon. This will start next week (12th September). Children should bring in their swimwear and £2 every Monday.
In Year 6, it is your child’s responsibility to change their own reading book. Children will be given one reading book at a time to share with you at home. When they have finished their book and you have written in their Home/School diary, the book needs to be returned to the bookshelf after informing either Mr. Wiggin or Jane (Yr 6 TA). We encourage you to listen to your child read as much as possible as well as them reading independently. We would appreciate any comments in their reading journals when this is done. They will also be heard in a weekly, guided reading group.
English homework will be sent out on a weekly basis. This will generally be on a Friday, where we expect the completed homework to be back in school by the following Wednesday morning.
Your child has already received their maths homework book and we expect them to complete 2-4 pages of this book each week. We will be checking that children are doing this weekly. We have already informed the children that they have to mark this work themselves, and should ask for support from both parents and Y6 staff when struggling.
We have a new spellings format this year, where children will be required to learn a spelling rule, rather than a standard set of words. Children will then be tested on Fridays with words that use the particular spelling rule being learnt that week. Spelling Books and homework will be sent out on the 9th September.
At the end of year 6, all children will be sitting national tests called SATs. With SATS being only 9 months away, we would greatly appreciate any extra support you could provide your child from home with regards to revision and practice.
AN IMPORTANT NOTE – SATs week is from Monday 8th May 2017 to Friday 12th May 2017. Under no circumstances will holiday be authorised during this time or in the fortnight beforehand. Please make a note of these dates in your diary.
Our annual trip to Kingswood is fast approaching. A meeting will be held just before half term to go through requirements for the trip. Please keep an eye out for this.
Please ensure that your child has a named water bottle in school.
We are really looking forward to an exciting Autumn! If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us.
