Hello and welcome to Year Two! We hope you had a lovely Summer break and are ready for the new term. The new topic for this term is Turrets and Tiaras and we hope that your child is ready for some fun with castles (with a little bit of hard work slipped in!)

As you know, there are four members of staff in Year Two; Miss French and
Mrs Webber are the teachers and Mrs Avery and Wendy offer support to the children in their learning. Miss French will be in school Monday, Tuesday and on some Wednesdays; Mrs Webber will be teaching on the other Wednesdays, Thursday and Friday.

The following notices are to make the transition into Year 2 more comfortable for your child:

Turrets and Tiaras! During this topic the children will visit Warwick Castle. A separate letter will be sent out shortly regarding this trip. The children will learn about William Shakespeare and William the Conqueror. Children will also be working on Traditional Tales with a castle setting.

Your child will soon be given a new reading book. If your child finishes a book at home, they can place their book & home/school diary into the BOOK CHANGE BOX (it’s a red box which we will point out at the beginning of the week) where they will be changed during that day. We are going to encourage the children to select their own books, as they will be able to choose texts to challenge and interest them. This will be guided activity to ensure good coverage of text types and appropriate level. During the week, we will aim to hear your child read at least twice. One of those sessions will be a guided group activity. If children haven't requested to change their books before this time, this will provide us with an opportunity to swap books then, if necessary.

PE Lessons
Please ensure PE kits are in school all week. Swimming will take place again in the Summer term, we’ll let you know about that closer to the time.

As you know, topic based homework was set before the Summer holidays. Two activities from that selection are due back on Friday 15th September and Friday 13th October. Homework such as this will not always be set as other skills need to be practised at home. Spellings will be regularly sent home for children to learn. They will be tested in school. Please help your child learn these spellings. Many of the spellings we send out will be COMMON EXCEPTION WORDS. These words are very important for the children to learn - they need to know how to spell and read these words. The spelling of these words also needs to be evident in context in their written work in order for them to be assessed as Working At the Expected Standard. Other spellings that we give out may test a new spelling rule taught during lessons.

We shall be continuing to use the Homeroom app. If you have not already signed up to this in Year One, please get in touch with us and we’ll send you an invite. We use Homeroom to share information and photos about the school day.

Water bottles and sun hats
Please ensure that your child has a named water bottle in school.

Thank you very much for taking the time to read this. Hopefully, the information provided will ensure for a smooth transition. Any questions, do ask.
